If it's your first time in Bangkok, you're traveling solo, or simply want to meet new people, you've probably come across Bangkok bar crawls or pub crawls while planning your nightlife.

But are they actually worth joining?

After organizing nightlife experiences and taking international guests out in Bangkok since 2017, our answer is:

It depends on which bar crawl you choose.

Choose the right one and it could become one of the best-value nights of your trip. Choose the wrong experience for your style and even a cheap crawl can feel like a wasted night.

The idea is simple. Instead of spending the entire night at one venue, a group visits multiple bars and nightclubs, usually with a host or organizer managing the route. Most bar crawls visit at least around three venues. Depending on the experience, the price may also include drinks, nightclub entry, transportation or special venue deals.

But Bangkok has some characteristics that make bar crawling here quite different from doing it in many Western cities.

One word:

CHOICE

Bangkok has an enormous variety of nightlife. You can join an inexpensive backpacker crawl one night and a luxury experience visiting upscale bars and nightclubs the next. The experiences can be completely different.

Some nightlife districts are compact enough to explore on foot. But many of Bangkok's better nightlife venues are spread across different areas, so if you want to visit several of them in a single night, transportation becomes much more important.

Another advantage is that if you know where to go, Bangkok can offer nightlife almost seven nights a week, especially during high season.

There isn't one standard price. Different crawls serve very different audiences. Here's a practical range based on what we've experienced in Bangkok.

Expect a backpacker-heavy crowd, inexpensive drinks and venues close enough to move between on foot. Best for travelers who prioritize meeting people and having a cheap party over visiting upscale venues.

These crawls usually visit around three or more venues. A welcome shot or selected venue promotion may be included, while additional drinks are normally purchased separately. Budget roughly 200–500 THB per additional drink, depending on the venue and what you order.

Some experiences at this level may include:

Certain experiences can also make access to venues with stricter door policies easier.

The goal isn't necessarily:

“How much alcohol can I get for the lowest price?”

It's more about:

“How much of Bangkok's better nightlife can I experience in one night?”

One comment we hear surprisingly often from international guests is:

“Why are drinks in Bangkok so expensive?”

This tends to happen especially when someone orders a basic mixed drink—say, a Gin & Tonic—and sees a price of 300–500 THB.

Imported alcohol in Thailand can face multiple layers of taxation, including import duties and excise tax. The actual burden varies according to the product, value, alcohol content and other factors.

But we've noticed something interesting after years of taking international guests out:

People complain about the price of basic mixed drinks much more often than they complain about genuinely good creative cocktails.

At a good Bangkok cocktail bar, guests might still spend 400–500 THB on a drink, but many are surprised by how good it is.

Why?

Because a great cocktail isn't simply alcohol.

You're paying for:

• Solo Travelers You don't have to walk into a nightclub alone, and you already have a group to socialize with.
• First-Time Visitors Bangkok nightlife can be overwhelming. Different areas attract different crowds, clubs operate differently, and the best place to go can change depending on the night. A good host removes much of that trial and error.
• Travelers Who Want to Meet People This is one of the biggest reasons to join. You may start the night with complete strangers and finish it with new friends from several countries.
• Women Traveling Solo Going out as part of a hosted group can feel more comfortable than experimenting with unfamiliar nightclubs alone.
• Different Budgets Bangkok has everything from inexpensive backpacker crawls to luxury nightlife experiences. There isn't only one type of “Bangkok bar crawl.”

• People Who Want to Stay at One Venue All Night Bar crawling means moving. If your ideal night is finding one great bar and staying there until closing, a crawl probably isn't the best format for you.
• People Who Don't Enjoy Socializing The group is part of the experience. If privacy is important to you, going out independently may be a better choice.
• Anyone Who Thinks Getting Drunk Is an Excuse to Touch Other People Simple answer: Don't join. Drinking and partying never give anyone permission to touch or harass another guest without consent. Everyone should be able to enjoy nightlife while feeling safe.

Our first recommendation is simple:

Read the reviews.

But don't just look at the star rating.

Read what previous guests actually say.

• How big was the group?
• What were the hosts like?
• Which type of venues did they visit?
• Was it focused on drinking, socializing or upscale nightlife?
• Does that sound like your kind of night?

A great bar crawl for a backpacker might be completely wrong for someone looking for luxury nightlife—and vice versa.

If group size matters to you, ask the host before booking, particularly during low season.

Bangkok nightclubs don't operate exactly like clubs in Europe or North America.

Some venues are heavily focused on table service rather than dance floors. Some have dance floors but become extremely crowded on busy nights.

Crowd levels may also feel different from what you're used to.

Understanding those differences before going out can significantly improve the experience.

• You don't know which venues suit you.

We've seen this progression ourselves.

Some guests join a crawl during their first trip, return to Bangkok several times, build friendships and local connections, and eventually become completely comfortable exploring the nightlife independently.

A good bar crawl that matches your nightlife style can offer excellent value.

You don't need to plan the route yourself, you can meet new people, a host is there to help, and you can experience several different sides of Bangkok nightlife in one night.

Choose the wrong crawl for your expectations, however, and even a cheap ticket can feel like a wasted evening.

So don't automatically book the cheapest Bangkok bar crawl you can find.

Book the experience that best matches the night you actually want to have.
